CAMPUS HOSTS PRIDE TALK SESSION

The IIE’s Varsity College Cape Town hosted its first Let’s Talk session for 2020 with honorary guest speakers, Dorian Basson (1st year University of Cape Town Bachelor of Social Work and founder of the Red Ribbon Foundation), Regina Malan (Owner of Mish Mash Productions) and Keith Robson (interim HR Executive and former Interim Chief People Officer at FutureLearn) during ‘Pride Week’.The students were granted the opportunity to engage in the subject matter regarding the sensitivity connected with society at large and the LGBTQ+ community. Pictured above are students (f.l.t.r): Rafael Graça (1st year IIE Bachelor of Commerce), Concilia Kankolongo (2nd year IIE Bachelors of Arts), Raymond Geldenhuys (2nd year IIE Bachelor of Laws), our guest speakers Dorian Basson, Regina Malan and Keith Robson alongside students, Zandile Nyamza (1st year IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase), Kokesto Kau (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communication) and Zulfa Siu (1st year IIE Bachelor of Commerce). In a world run with fast paced news and media, stories like Dorian’s, Regina’s and Keith’s are often severely overlooked and glossed over. First hand talks like these reignite humanism in that they allow us to understand their richly textured experiences whilst ‘coming out’ to their friends, family and the general public. These unique individual perspectives in the LGBTQ+ community continue to bring in the mindfulness of compassion, healthy emphatic behavior and remove century old social stigmas associated with people in the LGBTQ+ community.
