- POSED FOR PROVINCIAL CENTRE PASSEight of The IIE’s Varsity College Cape Town Netball players will represent the Western Province at the Western Cape Provincial Championship 2021 in Langebaan from 30 April to 2 May.Sabrina Vermeulen (4th year IIE Diploma in Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching and Netball First Team Captain) and Renske Burg (1st year IIE Diploma in Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching) made the Senior Ladies B team for Cape Town Netball Federation. Jodee Johannes (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching) was chosen for the Senior Ladies A team for the Tornadoes. Kara Coetzee (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching), Khara Kaltwasser (2nd year IIE Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching), Autumn Simpson (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching) and Chidimma Adetshina (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Laws) made it into the U/21A team and Jana De Vries (2nd year IIE Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Management and second team member) made the U/21B team for Western Province.Said 23-year-old Vermeulen: “I am looking forward to playing on a senior level and I am willing to work hard on my technique to become an overall better player this year.”

- The IIE VC Community Law ClinicTo fulfil the need for a Law Clinic which will offer free legal assistance to vulnerable members of the North Durban community, The IIE’s Varsity College Community Law Clinic was recently launched at The IIE’s Varsity College Durban North campus. The Law Clinic opened its doors to the community on Tuesday, 3 May 2022 at 12pm and will be open four afternoons a week between Monday and Thursday from 12pm to 4pm as well as on the last Saturday of each month from 9am to 12pm.“We are thrilled to have launched critical pilot project, and the opening of the Law Clinic serves as an important milestone in the growth of The IIE’s Varsity College’s School of Law. We are looking forward to the Law Clinic playing a significant role in servicing members of the local community”, said Fiona Kaplan Head School of Law of The IIE’s Varsity College.The IIE Varsity College Community Law Clinic’s mission is to give high-quality legal advice and services to people who cannot afford private legal representation. The Law Clinic also aims to provide outstanding clinical legal training for the IIE LLB law students, incorporating social justice awareness and ethics, as well as instilling in them a community service-oriented approach to law and care for others. The Law Clinic will also be a forum for the academic community to collaborate on research that will help the vulnerable.Guests who attended the launch included Judges Mahendra Chetty & Thumba Pillay, Advocate Andrea Gabriel SC who provided the keynote speech on ‘The importance of law clinics in the current South African climate’ and Professor David McQuoid-Mason who also spoke on this topic. Mr. Andre Britz, Provincial Legal Manager: Legal Aid KZN and the UKZN Acting Dean: Law Adrian Bellengere were also in attendance.
- FIRST YEAR STUDENTS KICK OFF WITH ORIENTATION WEEKBefore the start of the academic year, first year students were invited to attend the annual Orientation Week which is designed to help them navigate through the campus, meet their lecturers and classmates during the academic days and make new friends during social days before the start of lectures.During the two academic days, first year students attended onboarding during which they were introduced to their programme and what they could expect throughout the year, met their lecturers and met their classmates through speed friendship. During Programme Orientation they were addressed and officially welcomed by Rajesh Chandarman Campus Head The IIE’s Varsity College Durban North and they met their Programme Managers. First year students made new friends during the social days which took place at uShaka Marine World and On Point Waterfront for the annual Wet ‘n Wild Day and Pub Lunch and Quiz which also gave them the opportunity to meet first years from The IIE’s Varsity College Westville and Pietermaritzburg campuses. OChella – the Student Services Campus Fun Day – themed Coachella this year, featured stalls by the Student Services team (VC Cares, Social, Sport, VC Voice & Career Centre.) Each stall had fun activities including puzzle games, rock paintings, face jewels, henna, soccer etc. As part of the entertainment there were live performances from 2 current students, DJ’s and a fire dancer. The Student Services portfolio heads, and committee chairs introduced themselves during interviews. Redbull sponsored sound and Red Bull drinks.“Students, I hope you have enjoyed your O’Week events and that you have connected with other students in your lectures, over the next few years you will make friends that will, more than likely be lifelong friends and work colleagues. - JURIDICAL SOCIETY FIND THEIR IDENTITYA Quiz Night was recently held to launch The Juridical Society (Independent Student Committee, The IIE’s Varsity College Westville) and to offer students an opportunity to network and build their substantive understanding of the legal profession through guest attendees. The society is run by elected IIE Bachelor of Law student leaders and is an initiative for IIE Bachelor of Law students, by IIE Bachelor of Law Students. Through this initiative, the society strives to offer peer guidance and support to all IIE Bachelor of Law students, manage projects such as social and networking events, as well as community outreach, to assist in developing students into successful future legal practitioners.Rajesh Maharaj (RHM Attorneys), Huzaifa Kader (DJ Wright Attorneys), Fathima Moola (Legal Advisor, Educor), Aimaan Isaac (Candidate Attorney, Abdul Shakejee and Associates, and IIE Bachelor of Laws Alumna The IIE’s Varsity College Westville) and Matthew Storme (Candidate Attorney, Lester Hall Fletcher Attorneys, and IIE Bachelor of Laws Alumnus The IIE’s Varsity College Westville), provided insight into the legal industry. The success of the launch has students looking forward to the next initiative and has stirred an interest in other students to join the society next year. - EMPOWERED GRADUATES UPSKILL THEMSELVESWith a degree in the bag and motivation to become more employable, graduates attended the recent annual Regional Graduate Employment Workshop (GEW) hosted on The IIE’s Varsity College Westville campus. The GEW is aimed to equip unemployed graduates with soft skills, insight on how to present themselves to the job market and encourage graduates to be tenacious in their search for work. A panel of experts discussed various topics including, Personal Branding.Buhle Khake (One Voice South Africa) explained that graduates should constantly evaluate themselves to encourage growth, change and to be able to adapt in an ever changing environment. Said Khake: “Your personal brand is a projection of your image. Therefore, it is important to know who you are but still be able to evaluate yourself so that you can adapt and grow”.Graduates gained access to a wealth of interactive career resources and tools on The IIE’s Varsity College Career Centre Alumni Online Platform, as well as advice from IIE Alumna The IIE’s Varsity College Westville, Eden Lütge (Junior Community and Social Media Manager, The Hardy Boys). Mock interviews were conducted so that graduates could engage directly with experts from industry such as, Express Employment Professionals, Pro Talent Recruitment and Tower Group Recruitment, and receive feedback on how to best present themselves during an interview. Adrian Pillay (IT Talent Acquisition Specialist, Pro Talent Recruitment) concluded by highlighting various points on resilience and the importance of this skill in the world of work. Said Pillay: “Positive thinkers with positive habits produce positive results”.

- Celebration of SuccessThe IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay campus recently celebrated 297 top academic students achieving an overall average of 75% and above during its 2020 academic year. These students achieved a total of 2 615 module distinctions.Students with a distinction average of 75% or above for a full module complement over an academic year are celebrated during the campus’ annual Celebration of Success event. Due to COVID-19 protocols this year’s award formalities took place during lecture times over a two-week period.“The Celebration of Success event recognises students for their academic achievements. Graduation is the ultimate goal. However, our Celebration of Success event is a highlight on the academic calendar each year as it bears testimony to our students’ academic excellence - a just reward for all their hard work and dedication,” said Paul Manson Campus Head The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay.
- Helping the EnvironmentThe IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay recently partnered with Collegiate Junior School for Girls Eco Club. Two Stinkhout trees were donated to the school by the campus’ VC Voice committee which acts as a conduit of communication in a reciprocal manner, to the wider student body and The IIE’s Varsity College Senior Management.The Collegiate Junior School’s Eco Club is one of the extra mural activities on offer for girls who attend the school. “We are registered with WESSA (The Wildlife and Environment of South Africa) as an eco school, and we try to meet their target of completing a certain number of action projects per year. Everything we learn about is focused on caring for the environment. For example, this year we have done a rhino fundraiser, we have taken up a water-saving challenge and we have been visited by representatives of the Sustainable Seas Trust and SANCCOB. We are constantly learning,” said Robyn Bentley (Eco Club Coordinator).Jaci Howell (Student Wellness Manager The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay) addressed the Eco Club pupils of Collegiate Junior School for Girls on the importance of the trees and the impact they have. “It is so heartwarming to see pupils so interested in the preservation of the environment.
