- Make the Next Four Weeks Count !!!Dear Student,Make the next four weeks count! July is here and we are entering the last month of your 2020 1st semester. - The IIE’s Varsity College Covid-19 UpdateGood Day Students,The President’s directive for drastic action to flatten the spread of the virus has been heeded and we are attending to this call whilst continuing with our educational programme, as part of our ongoing commitment to you and your future. Our campuses will be closing for contact teaching from Wednesday 18th March, thus Tuesday 17th March will be our last day of face-to-face teaching. All activities including social, cultural and sport events are also cancelled. We will be continuing with our academic programme using Learn or on Moodle as may be the case – lecturers will post or broadcast mini-lectures on core concepts and share additional resources and direction on the Learn space for each of your modules. Assessments can be submitted on Learn. Learn classes have also been opened for the small number of IIE modules currently not taught on Learn. We will be applying strict social distancing for tests, which we will, after consideration, continue to conduct for now. We will be staggering start and end times to ensure that there is limited interaction between students coming to campus to complete their tests. We will also have far fewer students in each room than we would normally have. Please follow the instructions of campus teams to manage this. Our facilities also remain accessible to you if you require them, although your access will be limited by our efforts to ensure that all venues or facilities are able to implement the required distancing. Your patience will be needed but we are sure you understand the need for the decisions being taken. Please contact your campus through VC Assist if you have specific questions about arrangements. You can also use the itsusupport@iie.ac.za helpdesk if you are experiencing access problems for Learn or Moodle. You also have access to the Student Hub as always. As circumstances change, we will communicate any further amendments to our programme, and please refer to our website in this regard. We hope to resume face- to-face classes on Tuesday 14th April.Actions required from our parents and communities1. Please keep your contact details up to date with the campus. 2. Please monitor your brand website, Facebook pages, your sms and vcconnect e- mails. 3. Please keep an eye out for messages and instructions on Learn or Moodle or your portal. 4. Please only use sites such as the NICD and WHO and the new Department of Health WhatsApp for information – there is much misinformation and fake news spreading and it causes harm and distress. Please do not circulate unverified information. 5. Anyone who has come into contact with an infected person or has personally been in a high incidence region please follow NICD and WHO protocols and contact your health practitioner telephonically. 14 days self-isolation is the very least we expect no matter what precautions you took while travelling and how well you may feel. 6. Please follow all the recommendations from the above bodies in this period to slow the spread of this virus. 7. Please keep us posted if you or a family member are directly impacted in this period. We join the President in confirming our confidence that the country will prevail as the community stands together.#flattenthecurve
- Welcome to the New World!Welcome to the New World. We’re very excited to announce that our New World Thinking brand campaign has landed. What’s the thinking behind New World Thinking? The world as we know it has been flipped on its head – changing faster than it ever has. To succeed in this new and changing world, you need to go beyond knowledge – learning to think differently, to solve problems, to ask the right questions. For The IIE’s Varsity College this means focusing on what we do best – developing critical thinking and problem solving. We equip you with the skills you need to thrive in the New World. We teach you how to think, and how to ask the right questions, because when you ask the right questions, you make better decisions and find better solutions. We call it New World Thinking. And it will influence how we live, work, teach and think. Our #NewWorldThinking campaign is intended to spark thought and questions around the future of education and society, and how The IIE’s Varsity College prepares you for it.#NewWorldThinking www.varsitycollege.co.za
- Meet The IIE Waterfall Campus Student Relations Manager (SRM) Dineo MasekoMEET YOUR NEW SRM.As of February, this year, Mrs. Dineo Maseko was hired at the IIE Varsity College, Waterfall Campus, as the Student Relations Manager. This position came along with her hard-work and dedication to assisting people in finding solutions towards any of their problems. This means that on this campus, that would be one of her main priorities with the students.Dineo was raised in the heart of Soweto and after many years of pushing towards her dreams she obtained her master’s degree in clinical social work. Dineo wanted to put herself in a position where she didn’t want to tell people what to do with their lives, but rather help students realize the different options and possibilities they have in their lives and guiding them into choosing the one that is in the best interest of their future.“My role is to facilitate that process and act as a form of support. It is very inspirational to witness a transformational journey that one takes once they are ready and willing to make changes in their own lives.”Prior to her being hired at the IIE Varsity College Waterfall campus, Dineo had many different work backgrounds which includes working for the Department of Correctional Services, Health Care Facilities, Schools and so forth.“I play an integral role in coordinating community engagement initiatives. This means I engage VC students with NGOs and schools within our community. This is with the aim of encouraging students to give back to the community. I promote the holistic wellbeing of students, which includes hosting physical, emotional and mental health awareness programmes. I also provide a counselling service for students who need it.” In the future Dineo plans to continue working with people and helping them in any way she can to bring about a social change. Beyond that Dineo plans on enrolling to complete her Doctorate in Clinical Social Work. While she believes that there is always room for change Dineo explained that, “I believe that change is a collective outcome and one can never achieve change alone. Therefore, I plan on being a part of the facilitators that will bring about social change. This will be achieved through advocacy, outreach programmes, awareness campaigns and assisting those who need help. “We at the IIE Varsity College Waterfall campus hope for nothing but utter success for Dineo in her journey with us. May her years be prosperous and filled with wisdom, joy and guidance and may she guide and help our students to the best of her ability every time.
- A STUDENTS TAKE ON MULTICULTURALISMIn January, Lesai Benedict Seema, a third year IIE Varsity College student attended the Asia World Model United Nations Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand. The aim of this conference was to allow the chosen applicants from around the world to experience diplomacy and multiculturalism.Lesai was one of 1200 applicants chosen to submit research papers and draft resolutions on global issues whilst representing a country.Lesai Seema explained, “Throughout my studies I have always maintained an interest in international law and people’s rights in relation to Global issues. I have always thought of law as more than just a set of rules but tools that can be used to better the lives of all people.”The Asia World Model United Nations, held by the International Global Network drew from 25 000 applications submitted from all over the world, then shortlisted candidate to 0,5 % of the applications. 1 200 youths were then invited to submit research papers and draft resolutions on global issues whilst representing a country.Lesai made South Africa proud even though he was there to represent the United States of Iraq where he received a certificate of appreciation from the organization that was approved by the Global Network. “This opportunity is not only for me but for all the South African youth, who still believe in the good for the world and are willing to speak up for those who are not able to” says Lesai Seema. In the future Lesai Seema plans to continue to find solutions for global issues as an integral part of the United Nations, headquarters in New York or alternatively in The Hague in The Netherlands. As an institution that supports Lesai in all his dreams we hope that he reaches the destination and goal he has set for himself and continues to make the IIE Varsity College Waterfall Campus proud in the process.
