The various make-up items donated will be used to assists Gr 12 students who are struggling financially and help them bring their Gr 12 farewell to life. 4OurKidsPe assists with make-up, hair, nails and dresses and for the boys they assist with suits and haircuts.

All new and pre-loved items collected were donated to MES (Mold, Empower, Serve). MES offers a Residential Care and Skills Development Programme for the homeless and unemployed clients.

- POWER BETWEEN THE PAGESThe importance of reading and the benefits thereof is what inspired The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay’s VC Cares Committee (student volunteer body) and the campus’ Information Centre to host a book drive for pre-loved and new books for Canzibe Primary School.The book drive, held during the first semester, provided students and staff with the opportunity to donate pre-loved, new books or cash for the school. The cash donations were used to purchase 40 IsiXhosa books.Said Jaci Howell Student Wellness Manager The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay: “The English and IsiXhosa books, cover topics/themes on building self-confidence, self-esteem and self-acceptance. We wanted the book drive to be meaningful which was what led to the specific age group of books as well as languages chosen. We hope the book donation will have a positive impact on the learners and assist in their journey of learning and reading”.

- Vic Bay QuadBryce du Preez (1st year IIE Bachelor of Commerce The IIE’s Varsity College’s Nelson Mandela Bay) barreling his way to 4th place in the Open Men Division during the recent Vic Bay Quad. The Nelson Mandela Bay team placed 2nd during the event held in Victoria Bay in memory of surfing icon John Pfaff, who created the very first Vic Bay Quad 36 years ago. Teams from Buffalo City, Nelson Mandela Bay, Eden, Cape Winelands and Cape Town competed.Said Bryce: “It has been wonderful to be able to compete again, after last year’s restrictions. The waves were incredible at this event and the vibe on the beach was absolutely buzzing. “It was a unique event as it was a team event. Each member of a team contributed points received for their placing towards the team’s overall points. Since this is not usually the case in surfing, it was epic to be a part of a team and Nelson Mandela Bay managed to place second, which was an added bonus”.
- BANDING TOGETHER TO SAVE THE PLANET5 sets of recycle bins were recently given to the Foundation and Intermediate Phase classes of Laerskool Piet Retief by The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay for World Environment Day. Staff and students raised funds for the bins and for the “Paint your Own” Earth cookies the Grade R learners were given. “The environmental awareness campaign provided a platform for staff and students to get involved and to do something meaningful and fun, which at the same time encouraged and continues to encourage the younger generation to take care of the Earth,” said Earlene Jacobs Head Student Services The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay.
- I LOVE MY SELFIEBeaming students graced The Lot in delight during The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay campus’ recent “I love my Selfie” Body Positivity Awareness Campaign hosted by the campus Student Wellness Manager, Jaci Howell and the VC Cares committee (student volunteer body). Students were encouraged to either send in a photograph of themselves with a body positive slogan or have a photograph taken in the on campus photo booth.Photographs included heartwarming and encouraging slogans. Said Melissa Goosen (1st year IIE Bachelor of Arts): “I adore VC Cares for promoting body positivity and self-love, I think all body shapes and sizes are beautiful - everyone should give themselves so much love because you are beautiful, inside and out. We should uplift one another. Everyone is unique and I feel that's what truly makes us beautiful!!”“I wanted students to break away from what society deems as the stereotypical “beauty standard”. I wanted them to embrace that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colours and so forth. It is a mindset that needs to change, to move away from the lie that beauty meets only one standard, it’s about embracing and celebrating body diversity. But above all its about self-care and learning to love yourself,” said Jaci.
- FROM WORRIER TO WARRIORShift Catalyst Nafeesa Baboo was one of the contributors to a recent online webinar on how to cope with stress and anxiety hosted by The IIE’s Varsity College nationally for its students. She was present on The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay’s campus where students were also able to attend her presentation face to face. These health issues are faced by and dealt with by many at one point in their lives.Baboo shared valuable tips on how to cope with stress and anxiety – health challenges faced by and dealt with by many at some point in their lives. She spoke of - how to make the shift from worrier to warrior. ‘Journaling with young adults’ by Baboo offered very valuable insight into the effective use of this tool for the students. Other tips included: breathing and tension exercises, acceptance and action plus some great drug free solutions such as the value of physical activity, getting enough sleep, not missing meals, relaxation activities and joining support groups.Said attendee Stanley Van Niekerk (IIE Higher Certificate in Business Principles and Practices The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay): “As a young person in the setting of tertiary education my emotions can very easily determine my success or failure. - NMB Triathalon ChampsSome serious training and dedication delivered the desired results - 3rd overall male - for Timothy Hayward (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay) at the recent Nelson Mandela Bay Triathlon Champs. The championships were held in St Francis Bay and consisted of a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run. “I am really happy with my performance. I knew the race was going to be fast paced and tough due to the conditions. I am looking forward to keeping the momentum going until the end of the year,” says Timothy.
- SELF-CARE FAIRTo learn more about the importance of self-care, students eagerly graced The Lot during The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay campus’ recent Self-Care Fair hosted by the campus Student Wellness Manager, Jaci Howell and the VC Cares (student volunteer body) committee.The fair consisted of 11 stations which, in one way or another, all promoted the importance of self-care and tips on how to take care of one’s mental and physical health. The semicolon tattoo station was the last station students visited – it symbolised the importance of mental health. “People around the world are getting semicolon tattoos to show support for those struggling with depression, self-injury and suicide. It represents the choice to continue because a semicolon is used when an author could have ended their sentence, but chose not to,” said Jaci. Items shared by some of the stations for the students’ self-care packs included a sticker, water, scented candle, stress ball, affirmation, stress apps, colour-in, healthy treat and incense.“Self-care is extremely important especially to us as students. We have a very fast paced schedule which could often cause stress and anxiety. The Self-Care Fair showed us how to take a step back, relieve stress and take care of ourselves”, said Zoe Barnard (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Commerce in Law) and VC Cares Chairperson.
- Slipper DayThe IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay VC Cares committee members (student volunteer body) sporting their slippers on Slipper Day. A total of R1600.00 was raised by the staff and some of the students for Reach for a Dream’s “Not all heroes wear capes” campaign. The campus’ Student Wellness Manager Jaci Howell and the VC Cares committee encouraged staff and students to purchase their R20 Slipper Day sticker to help make the dreams of children with life threatening illness, come true.
- Suicide Awareness CampaignVC Cares (student volunteer body) committee members Shannon Raffie (1st year IIE Bachelor of Arts) and Rathabile Mpolongwana (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Education Foundation Phase Teaching) at The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay campus during the campus’ recent Suicide Awareness Campaign. The campus Student Wellness Manager, Jaci Howell and the VC Cares committee displayed 40 bags along the campus foyer area to symbolise that, globally, someone commits suicide every 40 seconds (World Health Organisation, 2019). “Warning signs, suicide hotline contact details and survivor stories were pinned onto the bags to create awareness and to get students talking – in an attempt to break the stigma around suicide said Jaci.
- Teaching robotics and coding to young learners(f.l.t.r): Two of The IIE’s Varsity College Nelson Mandela Bay first year IIE Bachelor of Education Foundation Phase Teaching students Natasha Le Gras and Ray-linn Blignaut with Bongo Peteni (Lecturer - School of Education) with Jarren Gangiah Grade 7 Teacher - Charles Duna Primary School, Gqeberha. Jarren who is the head of Coding and Robotics at the school recently shared some of his vast knowledge on the important role coding and robotics can play in the development of young children with the IIE Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching students. “As we are headed for the 5th industrial revolution it is of paramount importance that what we teach in the lecture room matches the content our future teachers will teach in their classrooms one day. The concept of Coding and Robotics ties in well with the Technology part of our Foundation Phase Life Skills module.” said Bongo.

- NUTRITION IN INFANCY AND TODDLERHOODAmber Kelly registered Dietitian and Lactation Consultant Assistant recently addressed The IIE Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education students of The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth on the topic of Nutrition in Infancy and Toddlerhood.Health, safety and nutrition play a vital part in the journey of education. “We are currently training our IIE Higher Certificate in Early Childhood and Education students on the importance of Health, Safety and Nutrition. Throughout our Module it became clear that in order for us to give the students real life experience we need to reach out to experts in the field. Amber’s background in nutrition and experience as a mother of a toddler made her a perfect fit and the information she shared with the students both online and face-to-face was so helpful for completing the Portfolio of Evidence tasks as well as to broaden students’ horizons”, said Chris-Mari Wait, School of Education Lecturer The IIE’s Varsity College Port Elizabeth.The insightful presentation provided students with key information in understanding the important role health, safety and nutrition play in the development of young children. “It was particularly helpful to understand the Vitamins that are required and the food that carry those vitamins as this will be so helpful in creating an easy sustainable menu for an ECD centre.
