- Wellness DayMelanie Shotter (The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria Head: Student Services) donating blood during the campus’ recent Wellness Day. Three NGOs - the SANBS (Blood donations), DKMS (formally known as the Sunflower Fund – Blood Stem Cell Donors) and the Pretoria Skinner Clinic (TB testing, HIV testing, Cholesterol Level testing, Blood pressure monitoring and providing information about and issuing contraceptives) participated.Said Oscar Ramutsheli (Donor Relations Practitioner at the SANBS): “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the donors for attending our blood drive. Your continued support and willingness to host blood drives is highly appreciated.”
- PAYING IT FORWARDGeorge Weetman (Facilities Coordinator The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria) is passionately involved and supportive of Precious Blessings, an organisation dedicated to taking in abandoned babies and children or babies of mothers who are unable to cope with their newborn. His support was recently extended when some of the funds raised as part of The IIE’s Varsity College and The IIE’s MSA annual Staff Appreciation Day was donated to Precious Blessings.Said George: “It’s rewarding to give to those in need. My involvement with Precious Blessings started in 2019 after I became aware of the fact that they needed help. I then asked The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria to get involved and the response has been tremendous. I can’t do this on my own and would like to encourage the public to also get involved.”The Brands raised R86 900 by donating R100 on behalf of each employee during Staff Appreciation Day. Funds were donated to a variety of NGO’s nationally.
- Olympic TrailsTaneal Baptiste (2nd year IIE Bachelor of Commerce The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria) on-block during the recent 2021 Olympic trails held in Port Elizabeth. She competed in nine events including two A finals in the 50 meters and 100 meters Butterfly. She also, subsequently, competed and achieved her personal best times in 15 events in the SA Senior Nationals held in Hillcrest in Pretoria. Teneal only recently returned to the pool post two surgeries which kept her out of the water for 18 months.
- Easter treats for the children at Jakaranda and Louis Botha Children’s Home(f.l.t.r): Megan Kibidoe (VC Cares Chairperson The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria), Ina Kotze (Jacaranda and Louis Botha Children’s Home Fundraising Co-ordinator), Demi Rae Snyman (Student Wellness Manager The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria) and Lesidi Bodibe (VC Cares Vice Chairperson The IIE’s Varsity College Chairperson) with the Easter gift bags raised during the campus’ recent VC Cares’ (student volunteer body) fundraising awareness campaign. The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria raised R2520 worth of Easter eggs and R1000 worth of gift bags filled with treats to donate to the children at these two children’s homes.Ina Kotze said: “What an absolute pleasure to have met you girls and show you around at Jakaranda Children’s Home this morning. Thank you for visiting us and delivering the wonderful donations for both our Children’s Homes, what an amazing treat for our precious children.”
- Dress for Success(f.l.t.r): Lehlogonolo Manamela (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communication) and Jared van Zyl (2nd year IIE Bachelor of Commerce) the winners of The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria’s recent annual Dress for Success CompetitionThe event, facilitated by the campus Career Centre Co-ordinator and the Career Centre Ambassadors encourages students to showcase their version of their best workplace attire in preparation for when they enter the world of work.
- GEARED UP FOR FINAL EXAMSSome of The IIE’s Varsity College IIE Bachelor of Commerce 3rd year students geared up and in high spirits for their final exams after a very different and challenging 2020. As the students sit down for their exams, they owe it to themselves to work hard and do their best, but they should also bear in mind that the results won’t be the only yardstick of their success -. Exams will test their memory and their understanding of a concept, not their intelligence. It will reflect what they are capable of during one hour of one day in one subject. The campus wishes all its students all the best as they face their final exams and encourages them not to let anxiety and fear control them but to, instead be calm and approach each exam with self confidence.
- Committees End Year LunchThe IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria Student Services Team and Student Committees (VC Cares, Sports, Social Committee and Career Centre) recently ended the year off in celebration of the student’s hard work and dedication throughout the year with a sit-down lunch at Col'cacchio. 2020 brought a lot of changes but the students continued to find a way to engage, entertain and give back in more creative ways possible. The Committees continued to uplift their portfolios during this time with Meridian Hour Zoom sessions, Webinars, Motivational Talks, Fitness Challenges, Awareness Campaigns and Donation collections.
- Wollies Animal Project_Caption StoryMelanie Shotter (Head Student Services The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria) with the 126 liters of milk the campus recently donated to Wollies Animal Project Onderstepoort, Pretoria North. The shelter looks after dogs and cats and needs support from the community.The IIE’s Varsity College aims to instill a sense of citizenship and social responsibility in its students through environmental and community engagement projects and the donation to the Wollies Animal Project is the campus leading by example.
- Lockdown Virtual Relay Challenge _Media ReleaseThe IIE’s Varsity College hosted its first ever national Lockdown Virtual Relay Challenge for its 8 campuses during the first week of June. Teams of five members had to each run 3km. A total of 59 student teams took on the challenge. Kyle’s Angels from The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria won the ladies category in 01:07:03. The team consisted of Taneal Baptiste (Captain and –1st year IIE BCom), Leah Heygate 2nd year IIE BA, Lee-Anne Blake 1st year IIE BEd, Jenita Jardim 2nd year IIE BCom and Valeska Nel 2nd year IIE BEd. The campus’ No Name Brand team placed 3rd in the mixed category with a time of 01:15:30. The Pretoria campus entered 7 student and 6 staff teams.Said Carole Adam, National Sports Manager The IIE’s Varsity College: “The VC Lockdown Virtual Relay was the first real opportunity for our students to “connect” back into the VC Sports space. We decided on a dress-up themed relay since it encourages team work and gave the students a chance, even though virtually, to be part of a team and participate in an event with their fellow students. Our sports life ethos has always been about creating a healthy balance, so I am thrilled with over 59 student team entries for our 1st event as it feels like we’re getting back on track.”
- IIE's Varsity College Pretoria Heritage Month CelebrationsSome of The IIE’s Varsity College staff and students during the campus’ end off Heritage Month which was celebrated with a live performance by Gift Matjila (2nd Year IIE Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching) traditional attire and mouth-watering boerewors rolls.
- Jacaranda Children’s Home Handover _Caption StoryMelanie Shotter (Head Student Services The IIE’s Varsity College) with Dignity Packs that were recently handed over to the Jacaranda Children’s Home. The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria staff donated 44 Dignity Packs to the value of R3100. The Home indicated a need for a variety of toiletries and The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria staff decided to collect Dignity Packs for the children as part of its Mandela Month initiatives.
- Kungwini Welfare Organisation Handover_Caption Story(f.l.t.r) Melanie Shotter (Head Student Services The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria) with Manuela Loubser (Marketing Manager Kungwini Welfare Organisation) with the stationery and sanitary towels donated by campus staff to Kungwini Welfare Orgaisation.Said Manuela Loubser: “We appreciate every donor and all donations made. One person can make a difference.”Kungwini Welfare Organisation was founded in 1983 when the Paul Jungnickel Home was opened for adults with disabilities. Since then the organisation has come a long way and it now offers medical care and residence to 140 disabled adults. 25 senior adults are also cared for in the Paul Jungnickel Home Senior which opened in 2019. It also offers social work services and projects to assist and uplift the whole community in its immediate area, including an Early Learning Centre that offers schooling for pre-school children.They have various options to donate to their organisation and their various projects. The Virtual Empowerment Workshops were designed to help graduates get the right tools for job searching, especially during such challenging times.Guest speaker Bonsai Shongwe - Founder of Bonsai Shongwe Institute, best selling author and inspirational speaker shared his insight on how one can develop GRIT (Guts, Resilience, Initiative and Tenacity) with The IIE’s Varsity College graduates during the Brand’s Career Centre’s recent Virtual Career Development Week.Other relevant topics included: Branded™ - Building a compelling personal brand by Jen van Heerden from Meraki Collective who partners with young people, to help them develop their personal and professional profiles and Job Search Strategies by Pam Cherry, a career development coach who works with scholars, graduates and young professionals.Said Gugulethu Tshabalala Career Centre Coordinator The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria: “I believe that our Virtual Career Development week brought a huge amount of hope for our unemployed Graduates who have found themselves stuck and confused as to how to go forward with their job searches during this pandemic. The topics discussed may be a starting point for the graduates towards success in their job searches.”
