ZOOM GEARS GRADUATES _Media Release
The IIE’s Varsity College Career Centre recently hosted a Virtual Career Development Week with free daily zoom training from a variety of career development experts. The Virtual Empowerment Workshops were designed to help graduates get the right tools for job searching, especially during such challenging times.Guest speaker Bonsai Shongwe - Founder of Bonsai Shongwe Institute, best selling author and inspirational speaker shared his insight on how one can develop GRIT (Guts, Resilience, Initiative and Tenacity) with The IIE’s Varsity College graduates during the Brand’s Career Centre’s recent Virtual Career Development Week.Other relevant topics included: Branded™ - Building a compelling personal brand by Jen van Heerden from Meraki Collective who partners with young people, to help them develop their personal and professional profiles and Job Search Strategies by Pam Cherry, a career development coach who works with scholars, graduates and young professionals.Said Gugulethu Tshabalala Career Centre Coordinator The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria: “I believe that our Virtual Career Development week brought a huge amount of hope for our unemployed Graduates who have found themselves stuck and confused as to how to go forward with their job searches during this pandemic. The topics discussed may be a starting point for the graduates towards success in their job searches.”

- Wellness DayMelanie Shotter (The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria Head: Student Services) donating blood during the campus’ recent Wellness Day. Three NGOs - the SANBS (Blood donations), DKMS (formally known as the Sunflower Fund – Blood Stem Cell Donors) and the Pretoria Skinner Clinic (TB testing, HIV testing, Cholesterol Level testing, Blood pressure monitoring and providing information about and issuing contraceptives) participated.Said Oscar Ramutsheli (Donor Relations Practitioner at the SANBS): “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the donors for attending our blood drive. Your continued support and willingness to host blood drives is highly appreciated.”
- PAYING IT FORWARDGeorge Weetman (Facilities Coordinator The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria) is passionately involved and supportive of Precious Blessings, an organisation dedicated to taking in abandoned babies and children or babies of mothers who are unable to cope with their newborn. His support was recently extended when some of the funds raised as part of The IIE’s Varsity College and The IIE’s MSA annual Staff Appreciation Day was donated to Precious Blessings.Said George: “It’s rewarding to give to those in need. My involvement with Precious Blessings started in 2019 after I became aware of the fact that they needed help. I then asked The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria to get involved and the response has been tremendous. I can’t do this on my own and would like to encourage the public to also get involved.”The Brands raised R86 900 by donating R100 on behalf of each employee during Staff Appreciation Day. Funds were donated to a variety of NGO’s nationally.
- Olympic TrailsTaneal Baptiste (2nd year IIE Bachelor of Commerce The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria) on-block during the recent 2021 Olympic trails held in Port Elizabeth. She competed in nine events including two A finals in the 50 meters and 100 meters Butterfly. She also, subsequently, competed and achieved her personal best times in 15 events in the SA Senior Nationals held in Hillcrest in Pretoria. Teneal only recently returned to the pool post two surgeries which kept her out of the water for 18 months.
- Easter treats for the children at Jakaranda and Louis Botha Children’s Home(f.l.t.r): Megan Kibidoe (VC Cares Chairperson The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria), Ina Kotze (Jacaranda and Louis Botha Children’s Home Fundraising Co-ordinator), Demi Rae Snyman (Student Wellness Manager The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria) and Lesidi Bodibe (VC Cares Vice Chairperson The IIE’s Varsity College Chairperson) with the Easter gift bags raised during the campus’ recent VC Cares’ (student volunteer body) fundraising awareness campaign. The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria raised R2520 worth of Easter eggs and R1000 worth of gift bags filled with treats to donate to the children at these two children’s homes.Ina Kotze said: “What an absolute pleasure to have met you girls and show you around at Jakaranda Children’s Home this morning. Thank you for visiting us and delivering the wonderful donations for both our Children’s Homes, what an amazing treat for our precious children.”
- Dress for Success(f.l.t.r): Lehlogonolo Manamela (3rd year IIE Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communication) and Jared van Zyl (2nd year IIE Bachelor of Commerce) the winners of The IIE’s Varsity College Pretoria’s recent annual Dress for Success CompetitionThe event, facilitated by the campus Career Centre Co-ordinator and the Career Centre Ambassadors encourages students to showcase their version of their best workplace attire in preparation for when they enter the world of work.
